FRIDAY Noon Concert @ Buchanan High School

  Josiah Boornazian Group

The Los Angeles based Josiah Boornazian Group has been around in one form or another for a mere two years. Initially a “standards” quartet featuring Josiah on tenor saxophone with a few friends and colleagues from California State University, Northridge, the Josiah Boornazian group has since evolved into an innovative, genre defying, and exciting sextet featuring Josiah on alto sax, Matt DiGiovanna on tenor sax, Juanma Trujillo on guitar, Gabe Rudner on piano, Derek Beach on bass, and Brian Bothwell on drums. The ensemble’s members have a profusion of virtuosity, creativity, experience, and energy, and the players beautifully frame Josiah’s composions - ranging from the very simple to the very complex - with extended improvised solos.

The group’s concept includes playing everything from through composed material to completely “free” improvised music, and everything in between. The sextet’s influences are wide encompassing everything from bebop and hard bop to rock, classical, hip hop, and much more and this diversity is apparent in the group’s distinctive sound. The Josiah Boornazian Group, in addition to performances at CSU Northridge and in the greater Los Angeles area, will be touring California in winter 2009 and spring 2010, and giving various concerts and clinics in the fall of 2009. The sextet has recorded for CSU Northridge’s Music Department and will be featured on the University’s latest jazz album, which is to be released December 2009. Click HERE for more about CSUN, and HERE & HERE for details of the group.
